A submission was made to the Senior Advisor to the Prime Minister regarding the aforementioned.
The Prime Minister laid stress on women and instructed the setting up of a Women’s centre earlier this year which is now running in Kilinochchi. A further fact is that we have close on 1.2 million women head families in Sri Lanka. This could be out of approximately five-million-plus families in the country.
Two years back we had 4,000 such girls in the Western Province alone. They would have all given birth and it must be getting replicated across the country continuously. They maybe become single mothers. It should be viewed in the context stated earlier.
Hence, if it were possible we seek the interest of the Ministry of Social Services, Probation and Child Care, agency within Ministry of Health with a focus on young mothers, the Killinochchi centre on Women and the lead Ministry, on Women and Children to ask:
- If we agree that teen pregnancy is a fact
- Do we need to have support structures for them if not in place already AND
- If the above is true need we protect them in additional ways?
