Water and Sanitation

Watsan Assessment at Kopay Welfare center – In May 2012 CHA and MERCY Malaysia conducted a detailed assessment on water and sanitation issues at welfare centers located in the villages of Yokapuram and Selvapuram in the Kopay DS division in response to a request made by the Divisional Secretariat of Kopay.

This assessment attempted to identify condition of wells and toilets that are used by over 172 families in the 3 welfare centers that have been there for more than 20 years. The assessment identified 30 toilets and 16 wells to be repaired at the earliest before rainy season starts. By the end of 2012 eleven tube wells were repaired, two toilets were built and nine toilets were repaired with the support of Mercy Malaysia. Balance work is in progress.

Watsan Assessment in Vavuniya North – As a part of a joint project between National Water Supply and Drainage Board and UNICEF, a detailed technical assessment was completed to repair 100 wells in resettled villages in Vavuniya North.

The report that was submitted to NWSDB recommended the repair work to commence at the earliest. It is estimated that over 370 people from 100 families would be benefit from this programme.
